A fire-safe Christmas? From safe Christmas lighting to Christmas dinner
Christmas and New Year's Eve are all about conviviality.
Around the Christmas tree and the house, but of course also at the dining table and in the kitchen. We decorate the interior with Christmas lights and candles and enjoy a festive fondue or gourmet. Atmospheric, but also risky at the same time.
The risk of fire is many times greater in December.
Of course you would prefer to prevent this. Celebrate Christmas in a fire-safe way with these tips.
Choose a safe Christmas tree and Christmas decorations
The Christmas tree is the center of attention during the holidays.
More and more people are choosing a synthetic tree. Although this is increasingly becoming the standard, there are unfortunately still many artificial trees that are not made of fire-retardant material. It is precisely then that extra caution is required.
Therefore, in any case, use fire-safe Christmas lights with LED. These lamps do not get hot and are safer.
- Check the condition of the Christmas lights
- Use LED Christmas lights
- Unplug the power cord when you are not at home
Check the wiring and plug before decorating the tree. This way you prevent fire due to short circuit. Unplug the Christmas lights when you leave the house.
The use of safe LED Christmas lighting and taking precautions also applies to other decorations in or around the house. Like garlands for example.
Tip! Do you want to add some atmosphere to the Christmas table with candlelight? Preferably do not use dinner candles. It is better to burn a tea light in a holder. It is even better to choose LED dinner candles or tea lights. That is safer and more sustainable!

Preparing Christmas dinner or gourmet?
A delicious fondue or a nice gourmet with friends? These heat sources on the dining table can quickly develop into a firebox.
Especially if you use a gourmet or fondue pan with fuel such as methylated spirit. Electricity is a more fire-safe option.
- Do not use fuel such as methylated spirits
- Do not use extension cords
- Hide the cord properly and safely
Do not use extension cords or sockets that are not earthed.
This can increase the risk of an unsafe situation, such as fire or short circuit.
Also make sure you have a sturdy table and a concealed cord. It won't be the first time someone has tripped over the cord.
A (Christmas) accident can easily happen
Accidents are common, especially during the holidays. We simply use electricity and mood lighting more, while we also like to drink a glass of wine with it.
Caution is therefore advised. Will a fire unexpectedly occur?
Then the first need is to respond adequately and quickly.
Try to extinguish the fire as quickly as possible with a fire blanket or cloth. It is wise to prepare these in advance.
Also ensure that the fire cannot flare up further due to oxygen. For example, by opening windows. Get everyone to safety, go outside and call 112.
An accident during the holidays does not necessarily have to result in a fire. Burns are also common. For example, on candles, on the fire basket in the garden or on the gourmet pan.
Cooling is the first necessity. Do this under lukewarm water for at least 20 minutes.
Leave covering clothing such as a sweater or shirt on to prevent skin damage.
In this case too, it is important to consult the doctor on duty as soon as possible or, in case of serious burns, to call 112.
By observing the above precautions, Christmas will not only be a lot safer, but also more enjoyable.
